課程概述

This course will introduce cell signaling in a broad sense. The following topics will be covered, but not restricted in the content of lectures. (1) post-translational modifications-mediated signal transduction; (2) cell cycle regulation and apoptosis; (3) mechanisms of cytoskeleton-related cellular functions; (4) advanced techniques including imagining, microscopy and mass spectrometry for signaling studies.”

Hopefully this is okay with you. Let me know if you need further information from us.
Course description
The purpose of this course is to provide an opportunity for those Ph.D. students (and senior M.S. students) to learn recent developments in the emerging field of signal transduction. Only those who are directly engaged in the research work of cell signaling are admitted to the course. All the fundamental knowledge of signal transduction will be used for discussion in the lectures, rather than being extensively introduced. All participants are expected to acquire basic concepts and experimental techniques for signaling study prior to attending the course.

The following topics will be included, but not restricted, in the lectures:
receptor tyrosine kinases, non-receptor tyrosine kinases, protein tyrosine phosphatases, G protein coupled receptors, cytokine receptors, JAKs and STATs, nuclear receptors, death receptors, Ras-MAPK cascade and regulation by MAPK phosphatases (MKPs), T-cell and B-cell activation, post-translational modifications other than phosphorylation, diseases related to defects in signaling pathways. Some topics will be covered by invited guest instructors.

Students must bear in mind that there would be NO adjustment in the final score. For those who are not interested in the topic and therefore show a poor performance in class or in exams, the “failed” score is likely.
課程要求
The evaluation of students’ performance is based on three criteria:
(1) Quizzes in class. There would be quick written tests at the beginning or the end of lectures from time to time. (40%)
(2) Mid-term exam. There would be a comprehensive in-class written exam after all lectures are finished. All questions come from assigned text book and research articles. (30%)
(3) Student presentation. Every student who takes the credit is requested to make a presentation on an assigned topic. The details will be determined in the first class. (30%).
